Original Texas music rooted in traditional country with rock 'n roll & folk rock influences.

If someone asked me, “Who is Doc Mason,” I would say that I am a Texas Native Son, who began playing and singing after I was given a Gibson guitar as a Christmas gift by my parents when I was 20 years old. It came as a surprise and also with the stipulation that I had to play a Christmas carol the following year. So I played “Jingle Bells” by ear. I was born and raised in Vernon, Texas. My dad was a lineman for West Texas Utilities and my mom was studying to go to medical school after I entered first grade. She had the chance and took a job with the Social Security Administration Office in our town. They played the long game, and invested in their children. My parents loved music and my dad ran wires through the house for sound, and our alarm for school was whatever record was playing on the living room HiFi. So I was exposed to a wide variety of music, from Hank Williams to Dean Martin to Marty Robbins to Broadway Show Tunes. In the early 70's, while attending Medical School in Galveston, Texas, I was introduced to Willie Nelson's music. Long about 1975, my parents took my wife and I to a Willie Nelson Show in Wichita Falls, Texas. I recently read a review of that show that my mom had sent from the Wichita Falls newspaper. It mentioned that the show kicked off way late, but I don’t remember that part. I just know that I credit Willie for helping me play 3/4 time, waltz tempo. There was a lot of good music happening back then and it served to help maintain a sense of sanity during some stressful times for me. I enjoyed playing guitar along with the records.

After medical school, internship and residency, I had continued playing guitar, and in the mid-1980's, at the insistence of a fellow musician, I began to write my own songs. I wrote all the songs on "Just a Little Country Boy," which was recorded in 1993. It was released in 1994. My daughter, Ava, was 16 years old when she sang for the album.

I worked as an ER physician for 38 years, until March 2020. I am thankful for having had the privilege of occasionally being a songwriter along the way. It seems that from the pages of our lives, into the depths of the heart, the songs come. That has been my experience.

In the meantime, thank you for your interest and support.

Happy Trails,

Doc Mason
